Abstract

The multiplicity of ethnic-cultural identities observed among city residents is due to a number of factors. Of particular importance among those is the issue of whether residents migrated to a city from a rural area or grew up in that city. Interviews conducted among Kazan residents identifying themselves as Tatar or Russians have shown significant differences in the ways through which the “own” ethnic group is referenced, as well as in language practices, knowledge of (or adherence to) traditional customs, cultural preferences, and the mapping of other ethnic-cultural boundaries. At the same time, they have shown the attitudes, values, and cultural preferences that appear shared by the majority of Kazan residents, both Russian and Tatar.
